East Meets West

We took a boat to Greenwich (pronounced Grinich) last Saturday to see the Royal Navy College and the Royal Observatory.  The Observatory is the "starting point" for Greenwich Mean Time and the location of the Prime Meridian.  So each of us is standing with one foot in the Eastern Hemisphere and one foot in the West, with the clock behind us. The pics below are looking the other direction.  Hope standing on the line alone and then all three of us.  The brass line that runs between the arch and the clock also shows the locations of a number of places around the world, expressed in longitude.  Dallas was the closest to where we live.

We traveled to Greenwich by boat, enjoying a rather fast moving trip down the Thames.  Even on a rainy day, London is pretty from the river.  Sailing past Parliament and Big Ben, Whitehall, St. Paul's, the Globe Theatre and the Tower of London is a pretty nice way to spend an hour.
